Trade conventions (or industry conventions) usually feature lectures, and perhaps a keynote speech by an industry leader. Trade shows also usually include presentations and displays by various companies or individuals. People come to show off what they are doing and perhaps build interest in their projects from the media and potential clients or buyers. In addition, buyers come to certain conventions in order to find new products and make contact with the company that supplies them. There is also a social element to most trade conventions. It is a chance for people to interact with people in the same industry from all over the country or the world.
Professional conventions are concerned with the advancement of a certain industry or craft. Most professional conventions feature discussion forums, speeches and displays. A group or society that represents the profession usually organizes them. Professional conventions do not have the same commercial bent that trade shows have. They are more focused on the state of the profession. However, like trade show, they may have lectures and keynote speakers and displays on the latest developments in the industry.
Fan conventions are unique because they are not meant to be a meeting of like-minded professionals, but rather are a place where professionals and fans can mingle. Fans of a certain genre of literature, for example, or of comic books, can also socialize with people who have the same interests at such conventions.
